“Gumbo, stop licking my face,” Lena mumbled, still half asleep. Gumbo stopped for a second, then decided he wasn’t going to be told what he could or couldn’t do. “Seriously Gumbo, stop it. You’re going to wake her up.” She opened her eyes and gave Gumbo a warning look. Nathalie was sleeping on top of her. It felt good, and she didn’t want her to go. It had been years since Lena had woken up with someone she wanted to be with, and she’d almost forgotten how great it was. Nathalie’s weight on top of her seemed to have some kind of calming effect, like she was drugged with oxytocin and quite possibly hooked. Lena felt blissfully happy and she didn’t want to get up, not even for a coffee. Lying there with Nathalie was too good to give up just yet. She pushed Gumbo away and sighed as she put her arms around the sleeping woman on top of her. Nathalie stirred and moved her hand through Lena’s hair, burying her face in her neck like she had so many times the previous night.

“Shhh… it’s okay, go back to sleep,” Lena whispered.

Nathalie giggled underneath the cover. “I was only pretending to be sleeping, she said in a hoarse voice. I’ve been awake for quite a while but if you want me to move, I’ll move.” She sighed. “But it feels so nice.”

Lena smiled and took her into a tighter hold. “No, I don’t want you to move.”

Gumbo, however, had other plans. As soon as he realized Nathalie was awake, he jumped on top of her and started licking her face too.

Nathalie laughed. “Oh my God, is this how you wake up every morning?” She turned her head to face him and before she knew it, his tongue was making its way up her nostrils. “Stop it, you silly dog!” She moved off Lena and sat up next to her in bed, trying to fence off the overexcited terrier. “I think he wants to go out in the garden. Can I let him out?”

“Sure.” Lena said. “As long as you come back.” She watched Nathalie jump out of bed and walk into the kitchen to open the door for Gumbo. She was still naked, and she looked even more stunning in the light of day. Her sleepy face, the way she moved her hips when she walked, the sound of her laughter coming from the kitchen… I’m in over my head. How the hell did this happen?

“Do you want a coffee?” Nathalie shouted from the doorway.

“Sure. Do you need help?” Lena heard cupboards open and close.

“No, I’m fine, I think I can manage.”
